Latest Political Updates : Congressman Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, accusing him of using authoritarian methods to quell dissent and undermine democracy in India, in a stinging reaction to the detention of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Gandhi made the statement, “A scared dictator wants to create a dead democracy,” in an unnamed Hindi post on X.
Rahul Gandhi termed an attack on democratic ideals and alluded to a pattern of alleged targeting of opposition leaders and institutions, including the media.
“The arrest of elected Chief Ministers has become a regular occurrence, even though the ‘devilish power’ was able to seize all institutions, including the media, disband parties, demand money from businesses, and freeze the main opposition party’s account,” the Congress leader stated.
Gandhi said the INDIA group, the opposition, would respond appropriately to this.
In the wake of the 2021–22 excise policy case being dropped, a number of opposition politicians have denounced Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering investigation.
Veteran opposition politician Sharad Pawar claimed that Kejriwal’s apprehension demonstrated the extent the Bharatiya Janata Party is willing to go to gain power.
Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Sharad Pawar wrote on X, “‘INDIA’ stands united against this unconstitutional action against Arvind Kejriwal.”
The AAP and NCP are part of the opposition group known as the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), which is headed by the Congress (SP).
According to Akhilesh Yadav, the head of the Samajwadi Party and a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, the BJP is trying everything to prevent the opposition leader from speaking to the public because it is aware that “it will not come to power again.”
“A new people’s revolution will be born out of this arrest,” Akhilesh Yadav declared in Hindi on X.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, attacked the ruling BJP for what he called a coordinated attempt to subvert the opposition and tamper with democratic procedures in the run-up to the elections.
Kharge echoed concerns expressed by other opposition leaders when he said, “The arrogant BJP, which makes false claims of victory every day, is trying to weaken the opposition by all means and illegal means before the elections.”
He went on, “The accounts of the main opposition party, the Congress Party, would not have been frozen by abusing the constitutional institutions if there was real confidence of victory.”
Sitaram Yechury, the leader of the CPI(M), denounced the detention and claimed that Modi and the BJP were in “panic over people’s rejection in the ongoing elections.”
“Every opposition leader who joined the BJP after defecting is given special treatment and protection. The “Satya Harishchandras” are who they are! People’s resolve to oppose the BJP, uphold democracy, and protect the Indian Constitution will only become stronger as a result of these arrests.
