From December 1970 to June 1971 and December 1977 to April 1979, he held the position of chief minister. On February 17, 1988, Karpoori Thakur passed away.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the socialist leader of Gandhianism. “I am thrilled that the Government of India has chosen to award the Bharat Ratna to the esteemed Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Ji, the beacon of social justice, and that too during the centennial celebration of his birth.” This esteemed honor is a monument to his persistent work as an advocate for the underprivileged and a champion of empowerment and equality,” he wrote on social media platform X.
