After a “brief illness,” actor Andre Braugher passed away on Monday at the age of 61, his publicist confirmed to HuffPost.
In television, Braugher portrayed a variety of characters, such as Nick Atwater in “Thief,” Frank Pembleton in “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and Raymond Holt in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” In the 1989 movie “Glory,” he also portrayed a soldier in the Union, representing the first Black army regiment.
Deadline, the outlet that broke the news of Braugher’s death, also stated that the actor was scheduled to appear in the upcoming Netflix series, “The Residence.”
Braugher received eleven nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards, of which he won two, according to the Television Academy. Two Television Critics Association Awards were also given to him.
Variety stated in 2020 that Braugher did not have a breakthrough lead role in a “commercially successful project,” despite his many accomplishments.
According to Braugher, his decision to put his family and personal life first at various stages of his career might have hindered his success.
He remarked, “I think it could have been larger, but it’s been an interesting career.” “I believe it could have included more disciplines, such as producing, directing, and all these other varied things. However, it would have come at my personal peril.
Regarding his personal life, the “She Said” actor was coy, only stating to The New York Times in 2014 that he had encountered some “stumbling blocks.”
He remarked, “I won’t go into details, but there is a cost to not always being at the top of my game. “A memoir won’t be written.”
Braugher was a student at The Juilliard School and Stanford University. Since 1991, he has been wed to Ami Brabson, who is also featured in “Homicide: Life on the Street.” The couple is parents to three children: Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley. Sally, Braugher’s mother, and Charles Jennings, his brother, are also living.
