In a new documentary that premieres on the BBC this month, Princess Anne reveals that Queen Elizabeth was concerned that passing away at her cherished residence in Scotland would make things “difficult” for those getting ready for her funeral.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the queen’s daughter will appear in the BBC documentary “Charles III: The Coronation Year,” which will premiere on December 26. She claims the royal family had to convince the queen to spend her last days in Balmoral, the Scottish royal palace.
In an interview featured in the documentary, Anne states, “We spent a lot of time there in our youth and a lot of it was probably a more independent life than anywhere else,” according to the Telegraph. “I believe there was a time when she believed dying at Balmoral would be more difficult. We may have attempted to convince her that such shouldn’t be considered when making decisions. We felt that was the appropriate decision, so perhaps she did too.
At the age of 96, Queen Elizabeth passed away on September 8, 2022, making her the second-longest reigning monarch in history. Eleven days later, in London, Elizabeth’s funeral took place following a period of public sorrow.

When her mother passed away, Anne was at Balmoral with her. The queen adored being in nature and had a particular bond with the Scottish castle.
“I had the good fortune to be present for my mother’s final 24 hours of life. Accompanying her on her farewell trips has been an honor and a joy, Anne stated in a statement at the time.
The BBC documentary, which centers on the events leading up to King Charles’ coronation in May 2023, purports to quote Anne as saying she was unsure whether her brother could be ready to take the kingdom.
According to The Washington Post, she tells BBC that “to be honest, I’m not sure that anybody can really prepare themselves for that kind of change… not easily.” “And then something changes, and you realize that you should move forward with it now.”
