Shami was one among the 26 athletes from India who were presented with the Arjuna Award at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi by President Droupadi Murmu.
Mohammed Shami was the first Indian cricket player to earn the Arjuna Award since Shikhar Dhawan in 2021, and he became the 58th overall. Shami received recognition for his incredible performance during the 2023 ODI World Cup. In just 7 World Cup matches, the seasoned fast bowler claimed 24 wickets and emerged as the highest scorer during India’s journey to the championship game.
In the 50-over elite competition, Mohammed Shami’s total in the ODI World Cup has surpassed 50 wickets, and he is now just 16 wickets shy of Glenn McGrath’s record.

When Mohammed Shami developed into one of the best pacers in the world, particularly in Test cricket, Shastri was India’s head coach. 2019–20 was Shami’s greatest year in Test cricket, taking 47 wickets in 12 matches as India, led by Shastri, went head-to-head touring the likes of England, Australia, and South Africa. In nine Test matches in 2019, Shami took 33 wickets as payback.
Due to an injury he sustained following the World Cup, Shami was unable to participate in the recently finished Test series in South Africa. The veteran pacer, who is recovering from an ankle injury, stated that he wants to be fully healthy before playing again.
The team’s management is optimistic that Shami will be ready for the forthcoming five-Test series starting on January 25 against England.
