On Monday, Mamata Banerjee received a legal notice from Kartik Maharaj of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha, requesting an apology for her purportedly disparaging comments regarding the organization.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of Bengal, provided clarification on her recent comments regarding the Ramakrishna Mission (RKM) on Monday. She stated that while she was not against the organization, she had taken issue with one or two monks who had caused intercommunal unrest in the state.

The TMC chief’s remarks were made the day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked her at an election rally, allegedly for making disparaging remarks about the RKM, Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS), and ISKCON.
Speaking at a public gathering in the Bankura district’s Bishnupur constituency, Banerjee declared, “I am not against the Ramakrishna Mission.” Why should I disrespect an institution and be against it? When Maharaj (the former head of the RKM) was unwell, I even went to see him.

I’ve only mentioned one or two individuals. People at Bharat Sevashram Sangha adore me and they do amazing charitable work for the community. Kartik Maharaj is the name I only mentioned. He forbade our agents from entering polling places. He incited a riot in the district of Murshidabad two days prior to the election. I adopted his name for that reason.
