With the passing of Iran’s President Raisi, India will observe a day of state mourning on May 21.

India is standing with the people of Iran during this tragic time, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s statement on Monday. The minister also conveyed shock at the passing of Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the foreign minister and president of Iran.

On Tuesday, May 21, India will observe a day of mourning in honor of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, who perished in a horrific helicopter accident. A government statement states that there will be no official entertainment on the day and that all buildings in India where the national flag is normally flown will have it flown at half-mast.

“The Government of India has decided that on May 21, there will be a single day of state mourning across the country in remembrance of Iran President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister, who died in a helicopter crash. The national flag will fly at half-mast on all Indian buildings where it is normally flown on the day of mourning, and there won’t be any official entertainment, according to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Iranian media said that Raisi, Abdollahian, and several other officials were discovered dead at the scene of the helicopter crash in northwest Iran on Monday. “Deeply shocked to hear of the passing away of Iran’s President Dr Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian in the helicopter crash,” Jaishankar’s X tweet stated.

In addition, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences following the confirmation of Raisi’s passing. Using social media, Modi expressed his shock and sadness over Raisi’s tragic death, saying that “India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow.”
