On April 19, voting in the first round of the 18th Lok Sabha elections took place in 21 states and Union territories. In all states, voter turnout was reported to be close to 64%. We have elections today for seats in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
At about 2 lakh polling places, more than 16.63 crore voters—more than 8 crore men and women combined—will cast their ballots.

In the first round of the contest are Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, Bhupendra Yadav, Jitendra Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Kiren Rijiju, and Nitin Gadkari. Today’s poll candidates are Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress, Kanimozhi of the DMK, and K Annamalai of the BJP, who is the head of Tamil Nadu.
The opposition INDIA alliance is hoping for a comeback, while the BJP-led NDA is aiming for a larger majority. Of the 102 seats up for grabs on Friday, the UPA had won 45 and the NDA 41 in 2019. As part of the delimitation process, six of these seats have been redrew.

Seven stages of general elections will take place between April 19 and June 1 to choose the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. On June 4, the results will be made public.
