Whether the Indian government will permit Team India to enter Pakistani territory for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2024 is still up in the air.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan, has a hosting rights agreement that was signed, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Friday. In Dubai, the agreement was signed. Chairman of the PCB Zaka Ashraf signed the agreement.

“Chairman PCB Management Committee Mr Zaka Ashraf was joined by ICC General Counsel Jonathan Hall in the signing of the hosting rights to Pakistan at the ICC headquarters,” according to an official statement issued by the PCB. In the event that the tournament is held in Pakistan, it will mark the first ICC event to take place there since 1996.

It is important to remember that, despite Pakistan’s plans to host both the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2009, their cricketing industry suffered greatly and they lost the ability to host an international sporting event of this caliber following a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in March 2009. Due to security concerns, matches were removed from Pakistan after the incident.

It is unclear whether India will visit Pakistan to compete, even though Pakistan has signed an agreement. Despite Pakistan’s visit to participate in the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup, the Indian government has persisted in its refusal to permit India to visit its neighbor due to the tense political relations between the two nations. The Asia Cup was forced to be held under a hybrid format due to this very stance, with a few matches being held in Pakistan and all India matches—including the final—taking place in Sri Lanka.

When Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup alone in 2008, that was the last time India played on Pakistani soil. Concurrently, the PCB has declared that it has notified the government to furnish security to every team participating in the Champions Trophy tour of Pakistan.

The PCB in its capacity has already intimated the government to provide foolproof security to visiting international teams for the Champions Trophy,” the statement stated. “Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar in a recent meeting with Chairman PCB Management Committee assured the security agencies’ cooperation in the successful hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
