World Politics : Joe Biden made the uncomfortable mistake of confusing Emmanuel Macron with the late Francois Mitterrand, the former president of France who passed away almost three decades ago.

In one of his most embarrassing moments to date, US President Joe Biden appeared to have confused former European leader Francois Mitterrand, who passed away almost three decades ago, with his French colleague Emmanuel Macron.

Speaking to an audience in Las Vegas prior to Tuesday’s Nevada primary, the 81-year-old president falsely stated that he had a conversation with Mitterrand, who passed away in 1996, at a G7 summit in Cornwall, England in 2021.

It was in England’s south. When I remarked, “America is back,” Mitterrand, who was from Germany—that is, France—looked at me and asked, “You know what—why—how long are you back for?” Biden stated, alluding to a conversation with NATO chiefs during the G7 summit about the violence that occurred at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

And when I turned to face him, the German chancellor asked, “What would you say, Mr. President, if you picked up the paper tomorrow and the London Times said, ‘A thousand people break through the House of Commons, break down the doors, and two Bobbies are killed in order to stop  a prime minister is chosen. How would you respond to that?

“I never considered it from that angle,” stated Biden. “How would we respond if that occurred in a different democracy somewhere in the world?”

The White House acknowledged Biden’s error in the speech’s official transcript, noting that Biden should have said French President Macron, who has held the position since 2017, but instead mentioned Mitterrand. Conversely, Mitterrand served as president from 1981 to 1995.

When the 2024 presidential campaign gets serious, Biden has come under pressure for his age and mental health. His critics have pointed to his gaffes and accidents—such as falling down the stairs of Air Force One—as evidence of his incapacity. Conservative podcaster Graham Allen responded on X (previously Twitter) to Biden’s most recent gaffe video by saying, “This is not a healthy sign.”

Joe Biden’s superpower has been made public. He is able to communicate with the spirits of dead European leaders,” stated another X user.

“After watching this video, no sane person could ever conclude that Joe Biden is good for another four years. Not only did he mispronounce the name of a global leader, but pay attention to his rhythm. Another person said, “He’s stumbling, looking for words, and just obviously not mentally all there.”

Last week, Biden made the embarrassing accusation that Donald Trump was a “sitting president” in yet another awkward moment.

But the 77-year-old former US President Trump has also come under fire for his mistakes, such as his recent misidentification of former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as the GOP’s choice for president in 2024, Nikki Haley.
