Political News Updates : Show-cause notices have been sent by the Election Commission to Congressman Supriya Shrinate and BJP candidate Dilip Ghosh for the Mandi Lok Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh for their “derogatory” remarks directed at actor Kangana Ranaut and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“… on careful examination, the comment(s) have been found to be ‘undignified and in bad taste’, and to be prima facie violative of provisions of the Model Code of Conduct…” According to the polling panel.
Mr. Ghosh and Ms. Shrinate have till Friday at 5 p.m. to provide justification for why no action should be taken against them. “In the event of no response… it will be presumed you have nothing to say…” according to the ECI.
Kangana Ranaut and Supriya Shrinate’s Row
After a derogatory and misogynistic message against Ms. Ranaut surfaced on Ms. Shrinate’s Instagram account, controversy broke out.
The Congresswoman stated she has removed the offensive message in a video explanation posted on her X handle. Ms. Shrinate claimed she was unaware that the post had been made.
“My Instagram and Facebook profiles are widely accessible. Today, one of their members posted something incredibly obscene. I removed that post as soon as I learned about it. I can never make crude or personal remarks about any lady, as everybody who knows me well knows,” she remarked.
She further claimed that the post was the work of a spoof account using her name.
“It was duplicated from there and uploaded on my Facebook and Instagram pages by someone. I’m attempting to figure out who did this. She said, “I’ve also reported this parody account to Twitter.
By then, though, the picture and the post had caused quite a stir. The National Commission of Women had written to the Election Commission requesting that Ms. Shrinate be taken to court.
In addition, Sonia Gandhi was urged by NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma to take “severe action” against Supriya Shrinate and another Congressman, HS Ahir, for making such reprehensible remarks.
In this Lok Sabha election, Ms. Ranaut—her first political experience—reacted angrily.
“We must free our daughters from the shackles of prejudices, we must rise above the curiosity about their body parts and above all we must refrain from using sex workers’ challenging lives or circumstances as some kind of abuse or slur… every woman deserves her dignity,” she stated.
