Latest Political Updates : Following an allegedly offensive comment made by the senior Congressman against actor Kangana Ranaut—who has been nominated by the BJP as its candidate for the Lok Sabha elections from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh—Supriya Shrinate recently found herself at the center of a controversy. This led to a political backlash, with the ruling party criticizing the Congress and calling for her dismissal from her position as head of the party’s social and digital media.
In addition, she has been served a show-cause notice by the Election Commission for her remarks.
The post on Shrinate’s Instagram account featured a picture of Ranaut and a comment in Hindi. It made fun of the actress and her supporters, saying, “Kya bhav chal raha hai Mandi main koi batayega (can someone say what is the going rate in Mandi)”. Shrinate denied any involvement, saying that someone with access to her accounts posted it.
After the controversy, Shrinate was left off of the Congress’s list of candidates for the next Lok Sabha elections. She had previously contested for the Uttar Pradesh seat of Maharajganj in 2019, but this time the Congress has selected Virendra Chaudhary to represent the constituency.
Who is Supriya Shrinate?
In 2022, Shrinate became the head of Congress’s communication department’s social media and digital platforms. After Rohan Gupta was named the AICC spokesperson, she took his post. She was an unsuccessful candidate from the Maharajganj seat in Uttar Pradesh in 2019.
Shrinate worked as a full-time journalist for several media sites before going into politics. She worked as an executive editor in New Delhi for ET Now.
Her LinkedIn page states that she worked as the policy editor at ET Now from October 2008 to March 2019. During that time, she conducted interviews with a number of notable people, including the late Arun Jaitley, Piyush Goyal, P Chidambaram, Raghuram Rajan, Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg, and Satya Nadella. Shrinate has went to international summits such as the G-20, BRICS, and World Economic Forum.
From 2004 to 2008, Shrinate worked for NDTV for four years as an assistant editor. She was a Special Correspondent for India Today prior to that. Shrinate graduated from University of Lucknow with a master’s degree in history, having first studied at University of Delhi.
